Community Connections

Sundays@Six

Established in October 2004, Sundays@6 is one of the significant outreach events held by Scarborough Baptist Church. Scarborough being home to a number of backpacker hostels, the church decided to take the gospel to this group. Although primarily targeted towards the backpacking community, Sundays@6 also serves the local community.

Every Sunday night, at six o'clock, a free meal is provided. Following this meal, a short service is held. The sermons seek to show that there is a spiritual aspect to life, and that one can only truly know life if one knows Christ.

We try to make our Sundays@Six service as non-threatening as possible. There is no requirement for anyone to attend the second half of the evening. If one prefers, one can simply eat and leave. A number of people prefer to remain in the hall rather than to come into the church.

In the past year we have had many people from a variety of countries come and join us. Many of these came to Perth to learn English, and love attending Sundays@6: not only do they get a meal, they also get to extend their English skills.

Sundays@Six forms part of the Backpacking network. This network consists of many churches across the globe who have decided to reach out to backpackers. If you are seeking a backpacker-sensitive church in your local area, this is a great place to start.

Craft

For the past thirty years the craft group has met on Tuesday mornings for chats, tea and craft work - often in that order of priority. The result is  very close knit group who feel that they belong to each other. The group is also constantly being renewed by newcomers. The craft group draws people from the wider community around Scarborough. Many of those who come do not profess to be Christians. A short message each week, as well as an invitation for people to share their prayer needs, ensures that the message of the gospel is communicated in a non-threatening but invitational manner. A team of dedicated helpers see this as a great opportunity to share their faith to others on a one to one setting with others.

Mentoring

Scarborough is involved in a mentoring programme through World Vision in one of the local Primary Schools. Mentors work one on one with children at risk or children who have particular needs or problems either socially or academically.

The mentors are required to commit themselves to an hour a week during school times for the period of a year. During this hour the mentors typically play some board games with the children, go through some academic work and just have a time of informal chatting .

The feedback from the school has been very positive. The Mentors all also testify to this programme as being very enriching.
